ReadWorks.org has summer reading passages for students to read over the summer to encourage summer reading. Research shows that students can fall months behind in their reading without a summer reading program, especially the struggling readers. All these passages are summer themed to engage students. They are available for Kindergarten to 8th grade students. ReadWorks is a free program that parents can sign up for! Click on the link below to check it out!

First grade and I completed a flow chart after reading the book "Giraffe's Neck." We have been working on sequencing a story and retelling using details from the beginning, middle and end of the story. They did a great job retelling the story!

This afternoon, the 4th grade students read to the Kindergarten students! The 4th graders chose the books to read and chose the Kindergarten student they wanted to read to. I would say that both grade levels enjoyed the experience and we hope to continue this practice every Friday afternoon!

Today was a BIG day in Kindergarten Intervention! Students were able to segment CVC words and identify the letters that go with each sound! They are starting work on skills that are developed in middle to end of the year Kindergarten! They are like learning sponges and are absorbing so many new skills! It's always so exciting to see each year! :)

During Intervention, the 3rd graders and I have been talking about several comprehension strategies. One "fix-up strategy" we have been trying is for when text is too hard to read. Students should break their reading into "chunks" and then write down any reaction they had to what they read in the margin. They can also underline, highlight, or make a notation by the part of the text that make them stop and wonder. We are calling this "listening to our inner voices". The students have been doing a great job trying this strategy and our hope is that they can continue to use it within their classrooms.

The first graders were ready to perform their Fluency First passage, which was "Skip to my Lou." They did a great job and picked up quickly on the song! This passage was wonderful for the students to read and practice because it is full of sight words, it can be put to music, and it is repetitive! Great job first graders! :)
(Note: Please do not judge Miss Walters awful singing voice!)

The second graders and I have started a program called Fluency First. The program is designed to help students build their fluency by using familiar nursery rhymes, poems, and short stories. The program also helps improve word recognition and comprehension. The second graders and I have been practicing "Summer's End." We completed a Closed Word Sort and played Wordo to help build the word recognition!
